Whether you find yourself with a headache regularly or just have the odd one every now and then, it seems that none of us are immune from that constant dull, throbbing ache that can really ruin your day. Instead of reaching for the paracetamol why not try a more natural approach.

Essential oil 2

Essential oils can not only help relieve your headache but could also help to improve your mood, whether you use them in an oil burner, add them to a relaxing bath or just simply sniff them straight from the bottle, there is sure to be an essential oil out there to help relieve that annoying pressure in your head!

Here are my top five…

BERGAMOT

One of my favourite essential oils, bergamot is great for the nervous system and in times of tension. It is cooling and refreshing and is the perfect oil for you if you are suffering from a tension headache. This oil will help you in times of stress if you are feeling irritable and overwrought, it can also help to give you a lift if you are in low spirits.

MARJORAM

With restorative, relaxing and analgesic properties marjoram is useful for headaches and migraines, especially those caused by stress, feelings of anxiety, weariness and irritability. It is appropriate if you have become exhausted and stressed as a result of overwork. It is sedative so best to use later in the day particularly if you suffer from insomnia or find it difficult to relax.

LAVENDER

One of the most popular oils and a great all rounder, lavender is safe to use for all ages and is a great reliever of headaches and migraines, with a restorative and calming effect lavender is mood boosting and good for those dull throbbing headaches, if you have taken yourself to bed with a headache then this is the perfect oil to use, just add a few drops onto your pillow to relieve your headache and help you drift off into a restful sleep. Zzzzz 🙂

ROSEMARY

As a medicinal herb rosemary is used primarily as a tonic for nervous debility, depression and headaches. It increases the circulation of blood to the brain and can help to improve memory, concentration and mental alertness, it is a great remedy for the treatment of headaches and can also help many people who suffer with migraines. Use this oil if you need to wake up your brain!

EUCALYPTUS

With a similar smell to rosemary due to the fragrant ingredient eucalyptol, eucalyptus can be used to treat tiredness, poor concentration and headaches, it is also great for relieving congestion and is perfect if you have that clogged up feeling accompanied by a sinus headache.                                                               Emotionally, if you are feeling bogged down and confused, eucalyptus can help you to clear your mind and gain clarity.

While they can be effective for many medicinal uses, essential oils can be very strong. Some of them can increase or lower blood pressure and cause allergic reactions. To be sure, please learn about any possible contraindications before you use them and always opt for therapeutic grade essential oils. These oils are made through non-chemical processes (ie steam distillation)  and are non toxic and safe to use.

The Amazing Benefits Of Jojoba Oil

An absolute beauty essential 🙂

So now that you’ve rushed out to buy your Jojoba oil what exactly can you do with it?….

1, Jojoba oil makes a great natural moisturiser no matter what your skin type. Shop bought moisturisers can often clog the skin and block pores, contributing to increased acne for those with oily skin and in some cases repeated use of shop bought moisturisers can even dry out your skin. Jojoba oil combines readily with sebum so can be used to moisturise your skin without clogging pores and is also a non greasy, balancing moisturiser for dry skin.

2, Jojoba oil is one of the best natural oils to use for eczema. It contains essential fatty acids, vitamins B and E, plus minerals such as copper, chromium and zinc which work to speed up wound healing, soften dry patches and restore the skin to a healthy condition. The natural anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties of jojoba oil help to calm the inflammation of eczema and the natural vitamin E helps to reduce any scarring.

3, Anyone who has experienced the unsightly, red, flaky, itchy discomfort of psoriasis will no doubt be scouring the internet for some relief, if you have tried all of the over the counter creams and medications to no avail then maybe its time to try some jojoba oil. Applying Jojoba oil directly to the effected area will provide relief from the itching and irritated symptoms caused by psoriasis.

4, You can’t get rid of scars and stretch marks but you can significantly reduce them. Jojoba oil is the most recommended natural oil to treat stretch marks. The emollient properties of this oil penetrate into the deeper layers of skin to enhance its elasticity, which helps to reduce scars and stretch marks. For extra scar reducing properties try adding a few drops of mandarin and patchouli essential oils.

5, Jojoba oil is a great go-to product if you are experiencing the discomfort of sunburn. It will help soothe the skin if you have sunburn, heat rash or other minor skin irritations and will act as a natural moisturiser to reduce subsequent peeling and flaking.

Jojoba oil can also be used as a cleanser, make-up remover, cuticle oil, body lotion and anti aging serum, it also and has many uses for the hair and scalp…

A must have.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Bergamot oil comes from the bergamot orange, a similar species to the bitter orange. It is commonly used in perfumes, creams and soaps and it is bergamot oil that gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavour.

Bergamot oil is a great tonic for the nervous system, it is great for stress, tension and irritability and has a soothing effect. It is useful for tension headaches and for times when you may be feeling cross, irritable and overwrought. Bergamot has anti-spasmodic properties which makes it useful for problems associated with the digestive system, particularly where there is colic, painful wind or indigestion.

Always be careful when using bergamot oil as it is known to increase photosensitivity of the skin, which means you can tan or burn more easily, do not apply bergamot oil to the skin before going out into the sun.

Emotional uses and Personal Blends

If you’re looking for emotional uses or considering adding bergamot oil to a blend to help psychologically as well as physically then the following information may be helpful to you.

Constitutionally bergamot oil is appropriate if you are the type of person who pursues goals in life with a determination to succeed at whatever the cost. It is cooling and refreshing for the cross, critical, exacting person who begins to suffer from digestive and skin problems, and who’s nerves become raw and edgy. Add to bath oils or mix with a base oil to make your own bergamot body oil.

Bergamot oil blends very well with cypress, geranium, juniper, lavender, melissa, neroli, pine and rosemary.

Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Sweet Orange essential oil is one of the most versatile oils around, suitable for pregnant women and children it can be used by pretty much everyone and its sweet smell is one of my favourites.

Orange oil has a generally detoxifying and cleansing effect and will encourage the elimination of excess fluids and waste products. It has a moving action, good for a sluggish system and will help flatulence and constipation, just mix with a little base oil and apply directly over the abdomen. The main function of sweet orange is on the liver and digestive system. It is one of the main liver unblockers, great where there is congestion of the liver or spleen.

Gentle, easily tolerated, versatile and smells fantastic. Its an essential for your collection.

Emotional uses & Personal Blends

If you’re looking for emotional uses or considering adding sweet orange to a blend to help psychologically as well as physically then the following information may be helpful to you.

Constitutionally orange oil is suitable if you have trouble getting things done. If you find yourself constantly meeting obstacles and eventually becoming frustrated, succumbing to laziness and finding that trying to make any change in your life is an effort, then you may benefit from using sweet orange oil. Using orange oil will begin to accelerate the sluggish organic processes and your life will begin to change as you become more optimistic and purposeful, eventually eliminating your bad habits of over indulgence and avoidance of exercise.
